Plittersdorf–Seltz Rhine Ferry

Highlight • Structure

The Plittersdorf–Seltz Rhine Ferry (in French: Bac Seltz–Plittersdorf or Bac de Seltz) is a cable ferry across the Rhine south of Karlsruhe. It connects the French municipality of Seltz in Alsace on the left bank of the Rhine with the German town of Plittersdorf, a district of Rastatt, on the right bank. It is operated by the French European Community of Alsace. Use of the ferry is free of charge.

After the service was interrupted for five years following an accident, operations resumed in September 2010 with the newly built ferry Saletio. From October 2010 to July 2011, the ferry was out of service due to technical problems. Since then, it has transported around 100,000 cars, 60,000 bicycles, and 30,000 pedestrians per year.

View of the Rhine Lock

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Rhine is one of Europe's most important rivers and is approximately 1,233 km long. Its source lies in the Swiss Alps, where it originates from several mountain streams. From there, it first flows through Switzerland and then partly forms the border between Germany and France, before continuing through Germany and finally the Netherlands.
At Rotterdam, the Rhine divides into several distributaries and finally reaches the North Sea. Its catchment area is very large (approx. 185,000 km²) and includes many tributaries such as the Moselle, Main, or Neckar.
The Rhine is of great importance to Europe:
Shipping: One of the world's most important waterways for trade and transport
Economy: Connection of many industrial and port cities
Nature: Habitat for numerous animal and plant species
Energy: Utilization through hydropower in the Alpine regions
Due to its location and use, the Rhine is considered one of Central Europe's most important lifelines.
