Description
If you're looking for a serious touring cycling challenge with big rewards in Puerto Rico's Central Mountains, the Mirador Lago de Cidra loop from Caguas is definitely worth your time. This difficult 29.2-mile (47.0 km) route packs in 2363 feet (720 metres) of climbing, taking around 3 hours and 7 minutes to complete. It's a fantastic option for experienced cyclists seeking panoramic views and a cooler climate away from the coast.
What to expect on Mirador Lago de Cidra loop from Caguas
As you set out from Caguas, you'll quickly find yourself climbing into the verdant, mountainous terrain characteristic of Cidra, known as 'the Town of Eternal Spring'. The route is predominantly paved, but don't let that fool you; the significant elevation gains mean you'll be working hard. Your reward comes with panoramic views of rolling hills and, most notably, the beautiful Lago de Cidra, especially from the Mirador El Lago viewpoint. This challenging ride is best suited for cyclists with very good fitness who appreciate a demanding climb for stunning natural beauty.
Planning your visit
Given the difficult nature of this touring cycling route, ensure you're well-prepared with plenty of water and nutrition, especially on warmer days. The cooler climate of Cidra, thanks to its elevation, makes it a more comfortable ride than coastal areas, but the climbs are still demanding. There are no specific permits or fees mentioned for this route, but always check local conditions before you go.
