Rostock City Harbor

Highlight • Settlement

As early as the Middle Ages, Rostock's trade was primarily focused on seafaring. Since then, the port's importance for the city has grown steadily. In 1910 the port was deepened and expanded so that larger ships could now also approach the port.

In addition, an industrial site was built at the port. After the division of Germany, Rostock became the central transshipment point of the GDR. In 1960 it became superfluous with the construction of an overseas port in Petersdorf and a fishing port in Marienehe.

Today it is a popular promenade where the Hanse Sail takes place every year in August. With its many shops, clubs and restaurants, the idyllic harbor invites the city's tourists to linger. Passenger ships, river boats and yachts, for example, can moor on the quay. Excursions can also be made with a passenger ship. The Haedgehafen in the west is used as a museum harbor

St. Nicholas Church, Rostock

Highlight • Religious Site

One-time use of a desecrated church. Apartments have been built into the church roof since the 1980s and cultural events and concerts take place in the church hall.

The only church I know with a doorbell and an intercom at the church portal.

Fountain of Joy

Highlight • Monument

The Fountain of Joy was inaugurated by the Rostock artists Reinhard Dietrich and Jo Jastram on June 27, 1980 and is located on Rostock's University Square. As the city's meeting point, it symbolizes the unity and relationship between humans, animals and water and, with its 26 bubbles and 18 water fountains, is a symbol of the Hanseatic city and simply a great work.

Rostock Town Wall

Highlight • Historical Site

CITY WALLS WITH RAMPARTS
Large sections of Rostock's city fortifications are still preserved today. The city wall, gates, towers, watchtowers, and ramparts were built in the second half of the 13th century. The longest section of the city wall, stretching 450 meters, extends southwest of the Gothic Kröpeliner Gate to Schwaansche Straße.

Starting from the Steintor, you follow the city wall to Mecklenburg's oldest city gate, the Kuhtor (first documented in 1262). A plaque embedded in the wall at St. Peter's Church commemorates the city's confirmation of its charter in 1218. The last remaining Strandtor gate is the Mönchentor, which was redesigned in the neoclassical style in 1806.

December 7, 2024,Rostock 🛳️🎄Advents Spezial
In light drizzle, around 100 hiking enthusiasts started the Advent special over 20 km in Rostock at Braugasthof Trotzenburg today.
Past the Ostseestadion, through the city harbor to the Gehlsdorfer Ufer and back through the old town, there was a delicious Christmas menu at the finish. Duck legs, red cabbage, dumplings and much more were a well-deserved reward.
