View of the Bega River

Highlight • River

2

1.04 km

The Bega river has long been fixed into a canal, with the old towpath, mostly on the northern bank, now a perfectly paved bike trail, best connection West from Timisoara. Unfortunately it ends abruptly at the Serbian border without a crossing or even any trail on the other side. Classic contrast between well-funded tourism infrastructure in an EU country ending right at one of the few borders in Europe. So exit at Otrlec and take the road to the Foeni crossing.

Orthodox Cathedral ⛪ Timișoara

Highlight • Religious Site

Make sure to explore the cool catacombs underneath the cathedral, now a museum. The friendly staff can give you an excellent tour.
The Catedrala Mitropolitană din Timișoara is an impressive Romanian Orthodox church in the center of Timișoara, surrounded by a park on the river. The cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Timișoara and Metropolis of Banat. It is dedicated to the Three Holy Hierarchs, Saints Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom. Built on an area of 1,542 m2 (16,600 sq ft), it has 11 towers, of which the central and the highest has a height of 90.5 meters. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timi%C8%99oara_Orthodox_Cathedral

The artesian well in downtown Timisoara is not a historical monument. It was built in 1957 and quickly became a symbol of the city. Originally, it was shaped like a star with five corners, topped with bronze fish. Since then, the shape of the basin has changed several times. The last renovation of the Fish Fountain was undertaken in the 1980s.

Victory Square is also known as the Opera Square. The name of Victory Square or Piata Victoriei is actually quite new – dating back to the 1989 Anticommunism Romanian Revolution, which marked the end of communism in Romania. This square is actually where Timisoara was proclaimed the first romanian city free of comunism. The Victory Square is flanked by two of the most emblematic buildings in Timisoara: The Opera House the complex also hosts the National Theatre, German state theatre and Hungarian State Theatre) in the north and the Orthodox Cathedral in the south. This is a great place to go for a stroll, just like the locals do. It dates back to the early 20th century, when it was designed to replace the former citadel walls. It was actually designed as an art nouveau “promenade”, and people still spend their time walking along the “corso” (the right side, starting from the Opera House, where the aristocracy used to walk) and the “surogat” (in the past reserved for the workers to walk).
As for things to do, this is the heart of the Timisoara and it is full of terraces, cafes and shops. Victory Square also hosts the city’s holiday markets – like the Christmas market and the Easter market. If you’re visiting during holiday season, you’ll probably find souvenirs and local food there. timisoaratourism.com/things-to-do/what-to-do-in-timisoara

German State Theatre Timișoara

Highlight • Monument

The German State Theater Timisoara (DSTT) is a publicly subsidized German-speaking professional ensemble in Timișoara (German: Temeswar), the capital of the Timiș district in western Romania, where German-speaking theater was first mentioned in a document in 1753. The new theater was opened in 1875, but closed again in 1899 as a result of increasing Magyarization in what was then the Kingdom of Hungary. The ceremonial reopening of the German State Theater Timisoara (DSTT) took place on June 27, 1953. The German State Theater is located in the right wing of the National Theater and Opera building with an entrance from Strada Alba Iulia. It has a 100-seat theater hall, which it shares with the Hungarian State Theater. (Wikipedia)
