After a very long phase of diversion through the allotment gardens and the construction work on the two bridges at RS-Lennep station, every visitor to the route can now look forward to the new direct connection.

Balkantrasse Rail Trail

Highlight • Cycleway

Cycling on the former railway line through the hilly landscape is possible without much effort and therefore also suitable for families. Tunnels, bridges and viaducts still shape the landscape today and make cycling a special experience.

At the end of a mountainous stretch, the old water tower appears, which we always admired as small children when we drove north on the motorway (with our parents, of course). So the wish to see the tower up close only became a reality when we were older and on our bikes.
A beautiful tour that reminds us of our …

In May 2022, the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV) developed the idea of reactivating the Balkantrasse as a single-lane “Regio-Tram” while preserving the cycle path. In simple terms, a regional tram …

Before the bike goes in for inspection, we took a ride through the Bergisches Land. We went to Hückeswagen. On the Balkantrasse, which was empty at the start of the tour (apart from people walking their dogs who thought they were alone on the route), we went steadily uphill to Bergisch Born. Then we changed to the Wipperbahn to Hückeswagen. …

It is easy to cycle on the former railway line from Opladen to Lennep (Balkantrasse). The gradient is 1% over the entire route. There are interesting information boards about the old railway line along the way.

Free time for work, isn't that wonderful? I was already traveling in North Rhine-Westphalia for the 2024 season and was even able to accompany this job on my own bike. We are on the #Balkantrasse, which once connected the Leverkusen district of #Opladen with the Bergisch #Lennep, which today belongs to #Remscheid. The route is now asphalted, but the “Association …

Hello everyone,
Once again there was ONE day where the weather was perfect for cycling. On Friday, October 4th, 2024, I cycled the "classic cycle-railway route" in my home zone from RS-Lennep to Opladen. This is to show you that you can do this route without the bike bus (you then travel from Opladen via SG-Hbf. or Wuppertal) and back …

Art on the Balkan route from Remscheid Lennep to Opladen BHF.
Lots to see around every corner and the scenic views are wonderful too.
ONLY..... At the end of May it was COLD...11 degrees 🥶 that I really drove with gloves and turned on the heated seats on the way home!!!!

2nd part of today's tour. There was no Komoot navigation by map, but the voice navigation still worked, technically incomprehensible for me ???? 🤨
Kind of like flying blind. The Balkan route is well signposted, runs great due to the constant gradient, but offers hardly any views.
Opladen train station is very suitable for bicycles. 👍
