Sunny Meadows in Höltigbaum

Highlight • Natural

A very tough section with a gravel bike. The paths directly along or across the meadow are bumpy.
Nevertheless, the meadow is a good change and I enjoy riding it.
The originally cordoned-off old ammunition depot has been open for passage since this year. Take a look!

Cattle Pond at Höltigbaum

Highlight • Lake

A good place to meet the cattle is their drinking and bathing area, located directly on the former Panzer Ring Road.

From the bench, you can observe the Galloways very well in the pasture.
Among all the black ones, there was even a white one.
The bench bears the inscription: "wiet und siet kenn een to sehn" -
that may apply to people, but there were many Galloways to see here.😉
Addendum 23.10.21: Unfortunately not today and unfortunately not on the tours before either. You have to go look for them elsewhere.😉

Höltigbaum Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural Monument

A great, varied area with many rare plants and insects. One or the other rare bird species can also be found in the area. So please stay on the ways and the dogs have to stay on the leash. It is better that way, because there can also be adder on the heathland. And the dear cattle share the meadow with the hikers in some areas.
Since the area is quite extensive, it is easy to hike.

Wandseteich Pond

Highlight • Lake

The "Wandseteich" is a retention basin and the largest body of water in the Stellmoorer Tunneltal. The Wandse dam, built in the 1950s, dams the irregular water loads of the small river and releases them only slowly into the lower reaches. In this way, it carries water for longer than under natural conditions. The disadvantage of the retention basin: its water heats up considerably, which makes life difficult for typical flowing water creatures in the lower reaches.
The Höltigbaum is traversed by the Wandse, a tributary of the Alster.
Since the original source was diverted, the Wandse is now fed exclusively by the low water from the surrounding area. The Wandse therefore only carries water in the Höltigbaum temporarily during the year and usually dries up as early as May. Only after the confluence with the Stellmoorer Quellfluss does the Wandse turn into a constantly flowing watercourse.

The Stellmoorer Tunneltal in Hamburg-Rahlstedt is known for its wide, open meadows. In late summer, heather blooms here and there, bathing the landscape in a soft purple. The landscape provides a habitat for many insects and birds. In order to preserve it sustainably, the sensitive ecosystem of the Stellmoorer Tunneltal is under nature conservation.

Who hikes so late in the cold and wind?

It's Andreas and Jürgen

Today the weather forecast promised another clear, frosty and sunny day, so I arranged to meet Jürgen to go for another walk through the Höltigba - fantastic air and a really nice tour, thank you for that@Jürgen Brennert
