Description

If you're looking for a truly rewarding, albeit challenging, gravel biking adventure, the Klickitat Park loop from Mayer State Park is definitely worth your time. This difficult 36.0-mile (58.0 km) route packs in 3409 feet (1039 metres) of elevation gain, taking roughly 4 hours and 45 minutes to complete. It's a fantastic option for experienced gravel riders with very good fitness who want to explore diverse terrain and stunning scenery in the Columbia River Gorge.

What to expect on Klickitat Park loop from Mayer State Park

This route takes you on a journey through varied landscapes, from mostly paved sections to rugged gravel, mixed rock and dirt, and even areas with railroad ballast. You'll encounter smoother crushed pea gravel near Lyle and Klickitat, but be prepared for rougher, "chundery looser rock type gravel" and sharp rocks, especially in Swale Canyon. The trail offers breathtaking views of the Columbia River Gorge and the dramatic Klickitat River Valley, winding through carved gorges and hillsides dotted with oak and ponderosa pine forests. While the grade is generally gentle, following an old railroad bed, the varied and often rough terrain means this is a difficult ride requiring very good fitness. You'll want a cyclocross or mountain bike with gravel tires, and wider tubeless tires (45c-47mm) are highly recommended for handling sharp rocks, with front suspension adding comfort and control.

Planning your visit

The Klickitat Park loop starts from Mayer State Park, offering convenient access. Be aware that Swale Canyon, a remote and beautiful section of the trail, is often closed during the summer months (July-September) due to heat, fire danger, and concerns for steelhead smolt. Given the potential for tire-knifing goathead spurs and other thorns, carrying extra tubes or tire liners is a smart move. The area is known for its abundant sunshine, being in the rain shadow of the Cascades, and in winter, the Klickitat River becomes a haven for bald eagles, making for excellent wildlife viewing.
