Bärenbrucher Watercourse and Bärenbrucher Pond

Highlight • Lake

The Bärenbrucher watercourse is an approximately 940 meter long water tunnel that begins here at the Bärenbrucher pond and ends at the Pixhaier pond, at the southeast end of the pond dam there.
The watercourse was only created between 1947 and 1949, long after the mining era, and is therefore the youngest structure in the “Upper Harz Water Shelf” cultural monument.

View of Bärenburger Teich

Highlight • Lake

The dam of the Bärenbruch Pond was built around 1644 using traditional pond construction methods and has been modified at least once since. At that time, the pond was part of a cascade of several mining ponds. Today, the dam is approximately eight meters high and about 230 meters long.

The Bärenbruch Pond extends into three valleys, giving it a remarkable shape. It is unusually wide for a mining pond, reaching a maximum width of up to 500 meters. However, it is relatively short when measured from the dam. The opposite bank is only about 60 meters from the dam.

Very nice path to go well.

Nice atmosphere by the pond. The pond is quite large and cannot be completely overlooked from all sides. Therefore, different impressions always arise depending on the perspective. At the moment (autumn 2020) the forest on the banks is still in very good condition. This gives the pond a romantic flair.
Correction v. September 3rd, 2023: The condition of the forest is now as bad as in many other places in the Harz.

Here is one of those convenient rest huts. It's also called Buntenbock Station. There are no tracks here, however. The railway line from Osterode via Lerbach and Buntenbock to Clausthal East Station was supposed to run through this spot. Given the significant difference in altitude over such a short distance, a very challenging route would have been necessary (three tunnels ranging from 145 meters to 545 meters in length, and nine valley crossings with elevations of 15 to 30 meters and lengths of up to 150 meters). The First World War and a recession that followed shortly afterward prevented its realization.

Beautiful flat tour from Prahljust over the ponds. This is again typical of the Upper Harz. Rustic, wide and today with a fair amount of rain. There are two hiking stamps 🙂.

Small but fine walk around at Buntenbock... I'm still looking for the train station 🚂 but obviously you can also walk to Norway here 🇳🇴 short fjord feeling... the dog had to take a closer look 👀

From the An der Trift parking lot in Buntenbock, we set off toward Braunseck. First, we take a short stretch through the village, then a wide, shadeless forest path steadily uphill to the mountain hut. It's busy there. We stamp our trail and continue along the next sunny forest path. We almost missed the turnoff, had hikers not dismounted from …

We've been to the area several times, this time I didn't recognize anything. The trees are missing. But if you ignore this loss, a hike over sunlit mountains is actually quite nice.

Small round at Buntenbock in the Harz Mountains. The weather held up well. There were beautiful views, interesting information on historical water management and two HWN stamps (137, 138).
The loss of the forest at the Braunseck is quite impressive, which is noticeable when looking at the pictures of the highlight. The spot is hardly recognizable.

Morning tour in fog and drizzle. Still beautiful

First tour with Kraxe. Unfortunately there is hardly a tree left at the Braunseck. The hut has also seen its best days. The Bärenbrucher Teich is all the more beautiful.
