Höllengrund Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural Monument

Höllengrund is a long depression in the terrain, a canyon without a drain. The rainwater and groundwater form swamps and pools. Romance in the middle of the inhabited area.
The hiking path along the marshland follows the Höllengrund to the end at a pond. From there you can seamlessly pass into the Wildau spa gardens.

Nature conservation in concrete terms: biotope/species protection through extensive grazing with sheep (Skudden) at Höllengrund-Pulverberg
One of the purposes of the nature reserve, which has been designated since 1995, is to preserve the endangered, strictly protected dry grasslands and their fauna. Many other areas in the area have already become overgrown because they are no longer used or cared for; they are becoming overgrown with bushes and forests. That is a shame because it also means that many rare, light-loving animal and plant species are disappearing.

Skudden, a very primitive breed of sheep and an endangered breed of livestock, are very resilient and undemanding.

They can optimally care for the valuable dry and moist biotopes and protect them from further overgrowth. This breed has also already proven itself against non-native species such as the late-flowering bird cherry, which displaces native plant species at Höllengrund.
Grazing animals for landscape maintenance are nothing new in Zeuthen and the surrounding area. Sheep were already kept at Höllengrund and elsewhere 30 years ago. This idea was revived by the NABU group in Zeuthen together with a shepherd who already keeps sheep in Müggelheim. Not only for nature conservation purposes and to preserve the landscape, but of course also for the enjoyment of the animals for young and old in the immediate vicinity!
