Tetrahedron Bottrop

Highlight • Monument

The view from the highest platform is great, but not for people with a fear of heights, as the way up leads over grating steps. Apart from that, the platforms sway a little as they are attached by wire ropes.

The heap is completely fenced. And yet it is something special - it harbors an old secret inside.
When the bombings increased towards the end of the Second World War, miners dug a tunnel into the large tailings dump. It was a tunnel with numerous side rooms and branches. The mighty mountain masses offered good protection for people. The so-called Moltke tunnel was converted into a hospital in 1945, in the last year of the war. It should provide protection for staff and patients. This hospital tunnel still exists today, but is not accessible. On the contrary: Due to the danger of collapse, all access points are sealed and the heap is cordoned off all around. In places, there have even been cave-ins when the ceiling of the tunnel collapsed under the pressure of the weight of the overburden and the forest that had grown over the many decades. At times, a declaration as a memorial was considered, but was rejected.

Pond and view of the memorial

Highlight • Monument

As early as 1895, the Landwehr- und Kriegerverein Gladbeck was busy erecting a memorial for the fallen soldiers of the wars of liberation against Napoleon (1813-1815) and the Franco-Prussian War of 1879/1871. However, the draft was not pursued further, and the funds collected were not sufficient for implementation. After the First World War - in the course of the monuments erected everywhere - a special purpose association was founded in 1926 to erect a memorial and in 1929 a committee was convened. The city building officer Richard Korn designed the round courtyard in 1930, and construction began in 1933. The city used unemployed welfare recipients to save costs. Inside the memorial made of Ruhr sandstone originally bore the saying frieze:
"1914-1918 To honor the dead of war, to call for generations of victory."
The second line was removed after World War II and replaced by the years 1939-1945.

November 13, 2021,⛰️ Braucker & Bottroper Alpen
Today's tour in the heart of the Ruhr area led through Gladbeck Brauck, Bottrop Boy and Bottrop Wellheim. Of course, the heaps that line up like a string of pearls in Gladbeck Brauck were, in the truest sense of the word, the highlights of the hike. But there was also a lot of interesting to discover on the way between …
