View of Störmthaler Lake

Highlight • Viewpoint

From here you have a great view of the Störmthaler See. It's hard to believe that it was created by flooding an opencast mine. The flooding was finished in 2012 and today it has good bathing water quality. On the lake you can see the floating art object "Vineta": It is reminiscent of the church in Magdeborn, which was dredged for opencast lignite mining.

Rest Area at Lake Störmthal

Highlight • Rest Area

In any case, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the lake from here. Unfortunately, this snack bar is usually only open on weekends. Too bad.

Lake Markkleeberg

Highlight • Lake

The Markkleeberger lake originated from the former open pit as Espenhain. Between 1939 and 1994 lignite was mined here. After completion of the coal mining began in 1999, the flooding of the lake. The final stand has been reached at +113.0 m asl, so that the Markkleeberg Lake could be handed over to the public on 15.07.2006.

The varied circular route around the lake is ideal for hiking, cycling or a Segwaytour. There are cafés and restaurants on the lakeside promenade.

In 2013, the Kanuparkschleuse was completed. Thus, the Markkleeberger See is connected by an 800 m long canal passage with the neighboring Störmthaler See.

One of many lakes in Neuseenland!
Cruise on the same is nice with a detour to Störmthaler through the lock. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wow, how incredibly beautiful this round was! 🥰 After the first sluggish 10-15km through the city and then even for the gravel bike, lousy road conditions, it was just wonderful. Again and again I had to stop and just pause. The forests, the meadows, the lakes, the trails, the weather, the tranquility... I think there is only one more beautiful …

This was actually a beautiful route east of Leipzig, only the second one this year. However, this year's summer weather was also very unpleasant today... cool and windy. Tensions were inevitable. 🤷🏻‍♂️But I did spot deer three times! 7.5/10

My active month of July starts late, but better late than never. The very first tour of the new month brought a few surprises. I hadn't planned it myself, but chose it from Komoot's gravel suggestions in my region. I adjusted the starting point, added a forest section here and there - and the round was ready.
