Pöhl Dam

Highlight • Monument

The dam of the Pöhl dam is a curved concrete dam. The dam was built from 1958 to 1964 near Jocketa (today part of the municipality of Pöhl) in the Vogtland (commissioned in 1964). The dam takes its name from the village of Pöhl, which is now under water. In fact, the underwater location serves as a diving attraction. The dammed water, the shoot, is a tributary of the White Elster.

The structure, which serves for irrigation and flood control, also functions as a hydroelectric power plant and includes two control passages, the gate and power house with a Francis spiral turbine (750 kW), and two bottom outlets.

Triebtal Valley

Highlight • Gorge

The Triebtal nature reserve extends from the dam wall of the Pöhl dam to the mouth of the Elster. An approximately three kilometer long path leads along the babbling shoots, past mossy rocks and trees. If you are out and about here in the morning hours, the whole thing becomes mystical as the clouds of fog dissipate. From here it is not far to the Elstertal Bridge, the Julius Mosen Tower and the Pöhl Dam.

Horse Pond

Highlight • River

According to the information board, this fairy-tale place bears the name Horse Pool, because a horse is said to have died there.

View of Elstertal Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

There is a parking space within sight of the bridge (directly at the Barthmühle train station). From here you can cross-country ski under the Elstertalbrücke and continue to the Pöhl dam through the wildly romantic Trieb Valley.

White Elster River

Highlight (Segment) • River

I can recommend this hike, paths are natural, gradients are minimal. However, sturdy shoes are recommended!

Beautiful route along wild rivers.
Recommended for warm days as long stretches lead through shady forest.

After an annoying week, only one thing helps: Get out into nature. Grabbed the camera, my husband looked for the route and we were on our way. Accompanied by countless bird calls and glorious sunshine ☀️ today we went from the Bartmühle to Ruppertsgrün then on to the Pöhl dam, where there was a delicious Soljanka 🍲 and a cyclist …
