White Moss Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The bridge at White Moss was installed in July 2014 to replace the previous wooden footbridge and form part of a network of cycle paths and improved access across the Lake District. The bridge was commissioned by the Lake District National Park.

The design of the bridge is inspired by the existing features on site: the three triangular stone pillars that support the bridge and the natural flow of the water. Within the new deck, the three triangular pillars are depicted with Corten steel panels. The movement of the water around the pillars and the swirling eddies that this creates are emphasised in the handrail supports at these locations.

Although the bridge’s handrails are based on traditional estate gates, they are heavier sections and hand-forged and punched holes provide a crafted, tactile finish. The steelwork is galvanised with a patinated finish and an oak deck with Corten steel inlays adds to the harmony of the structure with the rural environment.

Rydal Cave

Highlight • Cave

Take your time visiting Rydal Cave. It is a large cave on the north side of Loughrigg Fell, above Rydal Water. This cave is actually man-made, as a result of slate mining.

Take the stepping stones through the shallow water at the entrance to the drier part of the cave. A torch is not really necessary.

Rydal Water

Highlight • Natural

Rydal Water lies in the heart of the Lake District and is connected to the larger lake of Grasmere to the west by the River Rothay. Spectacular views over the lake are offered by "Wordsworth's Seat", a natural rock formation on the western side of the lake, thought to have been one of the poet's favourite places in the Lake District. Situated just off the Grasmere to Ambleside road, this tranquil spot is ideal for a peaceful walk.

Bridge House, Ambleside

Highlight • Bridge

Ambleside is the quintessential Lake District town. Buzzing with the comings and goings of excited families, hikers and sightseers, there's a real atmosphere to the place.

In the town are a smorgasbord of accommodation options, outdoor gear shops, adventure travel companies and great places to eat and drink.

However, it is the town's surroundings that are even more special. England's largest lake, Windermere is a short walk to the south. To the north is Lakeland's romantic heartland: Grasmere, Loughrigg, Rydal and more of Wordsworth's most beloved places.

The town is a superb base for Wainwright bagging. The classic Fairfield Horseshoe begins from the town and it's only a short drive to Langdale, where adventures on the Langdale Pikes, Bowfell and the Scafells await.
