Picnic Area in Marzoller Au

The Saalachauen between straightening and renaturation

Like many other rivers, the Saalach was straightened in the 19th century. The associated increase in the runoff speed resulted in an increased removal of rock from the river bed. This led to a gradual deepening of the river bed. The Saalach meadows were flooded less and less and the habitats typical of the alluvial forest, which are characterized by flooding and fluctuating groundwater levels, receded more and more. In the 1980s the problem was recognized and the renaturation of the German side of the Saalachau began. Since it was no longer possible to return the Saalach to a natural watercourse, flowing streams were dammed in the area and channeled into the alluvial forest. This did not succeed in restoring the natural flooding dynamics of the seasonal level fluctuations, but the groundwater level was raised and a large number of year-round wet biotopes were created. Through this measure, a near-natural alluvial forest was able to form again. In addition, non-native tree species such as spruce and hybrid poplar were removed.

Recreation area in the north of the alpine city

Today the Marzoller Au is a popular local recreation area in the city of Bad Reichenhall, and is accessible from a number of walking and hiking trails as well as the Saalachtal cycle path. Particularly noteworthy is the Marzoller Au nature trail, which leads from the Staufen bridge along the Saalach into the heart of the alluvial forest. A beautiful round through the forest, Marzoller Auen, and along the Saalach.
But the highlight was this spot with the pond and great mountain view, "wet feet".
It's very quiet here early in the morning, you only hear the rushing of the water.

August 7, 2022,Wanderung durch die Saalachauen und entlang der Saalach zurück zur Stauffenbrücke
Today right after breakfast we went to the Stauffen bridge in Piding, from there through the Saalachauen and further along the Saalach, over the small bridge and on the other side of the river back to the start. This is how the day can start 🍀
