Herengracht Drimmelen

Highlight • Historical Site

The houses on the Herengracht are stately witnesses of prosperity in the past. Partly due to the Breede Vaart that flows through this street with various apple trees and the characteristic houses along it, the Herengracht gets a very beautiful appearance. At the beginning of the street there are a few benches between the trees where you can take in the peace of the village. A little further along the Herengracht there is a Protestant Church in the backyard of a house.

In the Dorpstraat you slow down and marvel. Let yourself be taken back in time and admire the beautiful old houses, including those at number eight, twelve and fourteen. To the left of the house at number 8, which bears the year 1836, you can admire the old village clock of Drimmelen.

The Last Sandbags Monument

Highlight • Monument

The storm surge of 1953 also had consequences for Geertruidenberg and Raamdonksveer, many houses were in the water. That is why the dikes along the Donge were also raised as part of the Delta Works. This work was completed in 1994 and as a memento the last eighteen sandbags were cast in concrete and left as a work of art at the place where the delta height was last reached.

The Dries of Den Hout

Highlight • Settlement

The dries is a pleasant open meadow in the village centre of Den Hout.
Grazing sheep provide peace and ecological balance in the heart of the village.
A nice location where you can have a picnic or relax in the shade under the old trees.

Historical interpretation:
Dries is a toponym, it already appears as driesch in a 13th-century Flemish document and then means 'wasteland'. This evolved into a name for a settlement form in Flanders and the South of the Netherlands. At a dries, you will find houses around a central square, which usually has a triangular shape. In some regions, the square has a more elongated shape. In the Middle Ages, this central square served as a common pasture (meent) for cattle and as a place where people were allowed to plant, so they were not allowed to build on it. At a dries, there is often also a drinking pool. The main farms of the village were usually located around the dries, with a few smaller houses attached. The triangular shape allowed the cattle to be rounded up at night by having to close in at only three places.
