Nieuwe Haven Zierikzee

Highlight • Historical Site

Along the quay you will find historic warehouses, such as Nieuwe Haven 125, now a protected monument with a gable and tie rods, reminiscent of the city's trading history. Additionally, the hospitality spot “De Zeeuwse Schatkamer” recalls ’t Luitje’s former function as a loading dock, with a view of the Den Haas windmill (1727), and has become a creative meeting place.

Old Harbour, Zierikzee

Highlight • Historical Site

The port was of immense importance to Zierikzee for centuries. The city earned its money from both trade and fishing. If you visit Zierikzee, you can't miss a visit to the port. Take a stroll, sit on the terrace of one of the inviting cafés or learn more about the history in the Museumhaven Zeeland. Classic flat-bottomed ships from Zeeland and other historic ships are on display there and you can take a tour. You will not only learn interesting facts about the history of Zierikzee, but about the entire maritime history of Zeeland.

Nieuwe Kerk Zierikzee

Highlight • Religious Site

Previously there was a large cathedral on the site of the Nieuwe Kerk. The cathedral burned down in 1832. In July 1835 - two and a half years after the fire - work began on a new church (hence the name 'Nieuwe Kerk'). Because the architect who undertook the work went bankrupt, construction was halted for a long time. The Nieuwe Kerk was inaugurated in 1848.

At the end of World War II the church was badly damaged. A repair followed, but a general restoration remained unavoidable. Because of the high financial burden, the Reformed Congregation could not have the work carried out. The building closed in 1971. The Nieuwe Kerk deteriorated rapidly after windows were smashed and wind and rain were let loose.
A solution came in 1977. The building was given to the Stichting Oude Zeeuwse Kerken (Foundation of Old Zeeland Churches). The building was - with financial support - restored in phases in the years 1978-1988. As a fine example of 19th century ecclesiastical architecture, the Nieuwe Kerk is a special object in the monumental town of Zierikzee.

Kikkerfontein Montmartre Square

Highlight • Structure

The frog fountain is a nice meeting place.
Young and old know how to meet here on warm days. Know that you can bathe your feet here on warm days without any problems. Literally a cool place where you can cool off.
One finds cooling with the frogs, others find cooling on a lovely terrace.
Did you know that you...
In the summer, a small Montmartre is regularly held on the square, intended for local artists and creatives. or thinkers who sit quietly and listen to the splashing of the frog fountain.

De Hoop Mill, Wemeldinge

Highlight • Monument

Molen De Hoop, a flour mill from 1874 in Zierikzee, is a round stone mill with a radius of 23.50 meters. The mill replaced previous wooden and stone mills and was restored after a fire. The scaffolding is more than 12 meters high. The mill still grinds grain and can be visited on Saturday mornings all year round and on Tuesdays and Thursdays in July and August.

Nobelpoort Zierikzee

Highlight • Historical Site

Zierikzee ´Nobelpoort´
Zierikzee is the only city in the Netherlands that has the great privilege of having three of its medieval gates, which have remained virtually unchanged since the 16th century. Kampen also has three gates, but they have been heavily renovated in later times. They are reminders of times long gone when the city had to defend itself against the enemy.
Of these three gates, the Nobel Gate, which stands on the north side of the city, is the oldest. This can be deduced from the use of Tournai stone on the lower part and the masbling of bricks of the same part in the so-called Flemish bandage. There is no alternation of stone layers in the lengthwise direction of the wall. But on the other hand an alternation of stones in the lengthwise and depth direction in each wall layer.

In the Nobelpoort the medieval character is best preserved. Only the facade between the two towers on the outside has been changed.

The gate dates from the first quarter of the 14th century. After the heavy siege by the Flemish in 1304, the defenses were drastically improved. Part of this was the construction of this gate. The name of the builder of this gate is unknown. Unfortunately, this is no longer traced, because in 1811 the archive documents were sold as waste paper by the mayor of the time.

Like the Zuidhavenpoort, the Nobel Gate is high. It offered defenders the opportunity to spy on their attackers from the heights.
It is still the time of bows and arrows.
When the cannons could exert their devastating influence, they were no longer hoisted up by such high gates.

THE NAME OF COUNTRIP
How the Nobel Gate got its name is uncertain.
Nobel means noble, is the name of a coin, but also of a medieval name.

In 1303 a Ghise Nobelsone lived in the Bridorpe castle in Brouwershaven.
The Nobel Gate may have given it its name. A popular tradition tells that the building was founded by two noble ladies, Anna and Maria. Because one of them was crooked, the builders built one of the two towers with a slight bend.

Small alleys, the streets and roads are all paved with cobblestones, many small shops. Here it feels as if time has stood still.

Today, another leisurely stroll through Zierikzee was planned.
After breakfast, Joy was already quite excited – she must have immediately realized that something was planned for today. As we packed a few things into the car, she jumped straight into the trunk – so she didn't miss anything!

Today the four of us 👫👴🏻👵🏻 visited Zierikzee. Very beautiful old port town in Zeeland. Lovely to look at and stroll through. Lots of small shops, narrow alleys and everything clean and well maintained.
Highly recommended 😊

From Vlissingen we continue towards Zierikzee. Zierikzee is in the top 10 of Dutch monument cities and that is certainly right. We came here eyes and unfortunately also short of time. Definitely recommended for those who come on holiday in Zeeland. We have to come back here again. And completely unexpectedly we also found street art work here 🤣
