Historic Market Square, Neu-Isenburg

Neu-Isenburg was founded in the forest south of Frankfurt in July 1699 mainly by southern French Huguenots. The Reformed Count Johann Philipp von Ysenburg and Büdingen granted the religious refugees a settlement privilege for a farming village, which he named after his ancestral seat: the village of Isenburg, in French for the Huguenots "le village Ysenbourg". The center of the settlement, today's "Old Town", is the market square, from which eight alleys open up the square town center, the four wider streets of which form a St. Andrew's cross. The settlement is one of the few realized examples of a baroque ideal city. In the middle of the market square the rotunda of the first town hall from 1702 was formerly located. It was demolished in 1876 because of dilapidation.
