Henley-on-Thames has prospered greatly down the centuries and it has a particularly straight sections of the River Thames to thank for some of this. It is a renowned centre for rowing and every year hosts the Henley Royal Regatta, five days of world-class rowing that forms an important part of the social season for Britain's socially elite.

Remenham Barrier – First Official Timing Point, Henley Royal Regatta Course

Highlight • Monument

Barrier: Times for leading crews to the barrier have been recorded since 1929. It is called the barrier because horse riders following races were required to dismount or stop at this point. The first invitation events for women’s coxed fours were held in 1981 and 1982 and for women’s single sculls in 1982 starting at the barrier.
1945 Royal Henley Regatta
A two-day ‘Royal Henley Regatta’ (as opposed to Henley Royal Regatta) was staged between VE Day and VJ Day. Crews rowed three-abreast over a shortened course beginning at the Remenham Barrier. As in 1919, different trophies to the usual regatta prizes were on offer.

Greenlands is a country house on the banks of the River Thames. Built in the nineteenth century, the Grade II-listed building now forms the core of the Greenlands Campus at the University of Reading, and is used by their Henley Business School.

Hambledon Lock is a historic lock situated on the River Thames that features a long weir. The lock has seen various renovations, and even featured in Charles Dickens' short ghost story.

Hambleden Mill

Highlight • Historical Site

Hambleden Mill is an historic watermill built for grinding flour. It was constructed on the fast-flowing and narrow Hambleden Bourne, which discharges into the River Thames at this point. It has now been converted into flats and is Grade II listed. A mill on this site was mentioned in the Domesday Book when it had a rent of £1 per year. A nearby fishery at Hambleden in 1086 produced 1,000 eels, for which this part of the Thames was famous. Alison Uttley, who is best known for her children's series about Little Grey Rabbit and Sam Pig, described the Mill building as ‘The most beautiful place in the whole length of the long Thames valley’ and it appears in many paintings and photographs.

Henley Royal Regatta

Henley Royal Regatta (originally Henley Regatta) is a rowing event that has been held annually on the River Thames since 1839. The regatta lasts for 5 days (Wednesday to Sunday) over the first weekend in July. Races are head-to-head knock out competitions, raced over a course of 1 mile, 550 yards (2,112 m) from Temple Island upstream towards Henley Bridge. The regatta regularly attracts international crews to race. The most prestigious event at the regatta is the Grand Challenge Cup for Men's Eights, which has been awarded since the regatta was first staged. The regatta is very much part of the English social season, and as with other events in the season, certain enclosures along the course regatta have strict dress codes. Three other regattas are rowed over approximately the same course: Henley Women's Regatta, Henley Masters Regatta and Henley Town and Visitors' Regatta, each of which is an entirely separate event. Henley hosted the rowing events of the London Olympic Games in mid-July 1908, two weeks after the Royal Regatta.

Henley Bridge

Spanning the Thames, Henley Bridge dates back to the late 18th century. With five arches and made of stone, it's quite striking. Its age is impressive but it actually replaced a wooden predecessor and, before that, evidence shows another stone bridge was in its place, perhaps Roman. Nearby on the Berkshire bank is the Leander Club, one of the world's oldest rowing clubs.
