Moulsford Railway Bridge

Highlight • Historical Site

This huge railway bridge crosses the River Thames here. It is locally known as "Four Arches"... because of its four arches. There are two parallel bridges here, in fact, so the bridge is actually two bridges.

The original bridge was built between 1838 and 1840 for the main route of the Great Western Railway. The second, parallel, bridge was added in the 1890s.

It's a very imposing and impressive structure, particularly if you are just immediately below on the river bank path here.

Lovely spot to stop and enjoy the view. Unfortunately, no ferry to The Beetle and Wedge, on the other side of the river, in Moulsford.

South Stoke Village

Highlight • Settlement

Despite the occasional rumble of nearby trains heading to and from London and Oxford, South Stoke is a glorious little village on the River Thames.

It looks every bit the quintessential English village, with a pretty Norman church, a 17th-century flagstone inn and a mixture of thatched cottages and timbered houses.

It is within the Chiltern Hills AONB and there are many excellent walks in the surrounding area. The Ridgeway National Trail and the Swan's Way both pass through the village.

St Andrew's Church, Streatley

Highlight • Historical Site

The present church dates from as early as 1200s, although there was an earlier church dating as far back as circa 1080. By the early 1200s the original church was in need of renovation and was entirely rebuilt.
The current building thus falls outside the Romanesque Anglo-Saxon/Norman period of architecture and into the Gothic, the divisions of which are Early English, Decorated and Perpendicular. St Andrew's stands, therefore, as a far more elegant church than it might have been.

Built of local flint rubble covered with roughcast, it occupies a prominent position in the village. It has stone dressings and contains a chancel, nave, north and south aisles, south porch, vestry and western tower.

The church is dedicated to St Andrew, one of the twelve apostles. One reason for this choice is that it was at the instigation of St Birinus, a Benedictine monk, who had come to England by order of Pope Honorius I in the 7th century. St Birinus came from the Abbey of St Andrew in Rome and was recorded as having "built and dedicated several churches and brought many people to God."
