Cow Pond

Highlight • Lake

Cow Pond was renovated in 2012 to commemorate H.M. The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the diamond lattice balustrade of the Baroque-style footbridge being designed specifically to represent this momentous event. The oak arbour and footbridge were added as part of the renovation project, and as with the roof of The Savill Building, both the arbour and the footbridge were expertly crafted from sustainable Windsor Estate oak.

Whilst visiting Cow Pond, take a trip to nearby Chapel Wood. Autumn fills this woodland with the glorious colour of the Japanese maples, while a visit during January and February will be rewarded with colourful and sweetly perfumed witch hazels. Whatever the season, this charming wood is always a worthwhile addition to your walk.
Cow Pond was formally created in the early 1700s by architect Henry Flitcroft, as an extension from an existing pond. The oak arbour and footbridge, added as part of the renovations in 2012, were built according to the original 1748 designs.

Virginia Water is a beautiful, artificial lake in the southern end of Windsor Great Park. A loop of the lake is a lovely way to spend a few hours and there are a few interesting landmarks to discover.

Chief among them are the ruins of Leptis Magna, once a vibrant city in modern day Libya. The ruins were gifted to George IV in 1816 and reconstructed on this site. Another regal gift is the Totem Pole, which was given to Queen Elizabeth II by Canada in 1958.

Five Arch Bridge, the stone bridge which had replaced the original wooden ‘High Bridge’ in 1790, was re-built in 1826 to create a bridge architecturally imposing and still able today to cope with the demands of modern traffic.

A short stroll from the Pavillion, the Cascade is a 30-foot (9 m) waterfall. Created in 1789, its presence relies on a decent amount of rain and it’s at its most impressive after prolonged, heavy rainfall.

Just a little bit further along the trail are the Leptis Magna Ruins, which were built from masonry recovered from an ancient Roman city that existed in what is today Libya.
