Crowborough Road Through Ashdown Forest

Highlight • Viewpoint

Crowborough Road is winding, lumpy road between Nutley and the high point of the Ashdown Forest and it provides some stunning views over the surrounding. There are cattle grids at either end of the road, to keep the roaming sheep and cattle from roaming too far. Several car parks and sights along the way, including Nutley Windmill and Friends Clump.

Ashdown Forest

Highlight • Viewpoint

Sprawling across the highest land in the High Weald AONB, Ashdown Forest is the heathland remains of what was in Roman times the ancient Forest of Anderida. Once stretching for 120 miles (193 km), the ancient forest has been extensively cleared for industry and agriculture down the centuries. The high, infertile heath of Ashdown Forest is the part that escaped most unscathed.

With huge, open vistas, varied wildlife and myriad trails, it is a glorious place to explore. Fallow, roe, sika and muntjac deer all inhabit the heathland, whilst the distinctive warbling of skylarks and cuckoos are common sounds.
