Old bridge over the Arade River

Highlight • Bridge

The Arade River is a river formed by the junction of the waters of the Odelouca and Silves rivers, which flow down from the Caldeirão mountain range. It is the highest river in the Algarve, after the Guadiana.

Fort Santa Catarina

Highlight • Historical Site

The Forte de Santa Catarina, also known as Fortaleza de Santa Catarina de Ribamar, is located in Praia da Rocha, Portimão. It had a defensive function against privateers and pirates. The fort has been modified over the centuries, but its 17th-century main facade has remained. It is currently one of the most visited monuments in Portimão.

Marina de Portimão

Highlight • Structure

Surrounded by one of Europe's best-known and most beautiful beaches, Praia da Rocha, Marina de Portimão is pretty, and a favoured destination for mega-yachts of up to 50m whilst on their way to the Mediterranean. It's a good starting point or rest area for mountain bike rides along the coast.
Located on the safest harbour in Portugal, sheltered from the prevailing winds, in the wide estuary of the river Arade with its deep-waters, watched over by the forts of Santa Catarina and S. João do Arade, Marina de Portimão is part of a sea-facing tourist development, extending over an area of around 25 hectares. It has support facilities for recreational water sports, continuous surveillance, outdoor and covered car parking, bike locking setup, an accessible beach, a hotel, a whole shopping centre including restaurants, shops, bars and an ocean swimming pool.
As well as being the base for some of the main maritime tourism operators, who run daily tours along the beautiful coastline and offer a variety of leisure and sports activities, they also have a modern and complete boatyard for repairs, located on the left bank of the River Arade.
It is also the venue for international sailing and power boat competitions and an official training base for professional teams from all over the world.

Canned Fish Workers Monument

Highlight • Monument

A beautiful tribute to the Canning Woman, who was of great importance to Portimão's economy, especially during the dictatorship in the 20th century.

At that time, women had few labor rights and yet played an important role as wives and mothers, while their husbands usually worked in fishing or agriculture.

The sculpture is located next to the Portimão Museum.

Portimão Riverfront

Highlight • Viewpoint

A symbolic place of life in Portimão in the summer. The Riverside Zone, which, it's worth remembering, is on the banks of the Arade River, is quite busy with music and people walking. Some boat excursions also depart from here.
