St. Nicholas' Church, Aabenraa

Highlight • Religious Site

The Nicolaikirche is the Evangelical Lutheran parish church in the city of Aabenraa in Northern Schleswig, Denmark. Until the free congregation church was built in 1905, it was also the only church in the city.

The brick building is located at the highest point of the city's oldest settlement center at the end of the Aabenraa Fjord. Construction began around 1250 at the latest. The elongated building is unusually low for a city church and gives the impression of a single-nave hall church. Due to the north and south arms that were still added in the Middle Ages, the building became a cruciform church. The Nikolaikirche never had a tower, as did its sister in Eckernförde, which was equipped with a taller nave. However, it carries a high ridge turret over the crossing that dominates the cityscape. This was reconstructed in the 1960s according to historical templates after a higher brick tower with stepped gables had been built in its place in 1908, although it had already become dilapidated again.

The cemetery was moved about 500 meters west to Forstallee in the 19th century. The old churchyard is now a lawn. There is a special natural and cultural monument each. There is a huge horse chestnut tree in front of the main south entrance to the church. In front of the southern choir wall is a memorial for the victims of the First World War from the community, on which an angelic figure holds his hand protectively over a German and a Danish fallen man.

Aabenraa Pedestrian Zone

Highlight • Settlement

For a long time, Aabenraa was overshadowed by Flensburg and Haderslev as a trading town, but today the important port city presents itself as modern, lively and, above all, proud of its eventful history. The excellent scenic location on the Aabenraa Fjord also makes Aabenraa interesting for excursions into nature on foot, by bike or even up to Rosse, and bathing beaches and indoor swimming pools are also within easy reach.

For visitors interested in art and culture, Aabenraa also has interesting museums and galleries that present very different art and provide information about seafaring and city history. And if you are in the mood for shopping, you can let off steam in one of the most beautiful and longest pedestrian zones in Denmark, which is only interrupted by pretty marketplaces to linger.
