Severn Bridge

Highlight • Cycleway

The original Severn Road Bridge was completed in 1966 and replaced the old ferry. It's a suspension bridge with a span of 3,240 ft (988 m). Originally it carried the M4, but after the new bridge was completed it changed to the M48.

The Severn Road Bridge has wide pavements on either side, separated by barriers from the carriageway. It's noisy, but it's also quite fun to walk or ride across.

Severn Bridge

Highlight • Monument

Cycling over the Severn Bridge is a scenic and memorable experience, with the bridge crossing the Severn Estuary and connecting South Gloucestershire in England to Monmouthshire in Wales.

It's part of the National Cycle Route 4, and cyclists are permitted to use the footpath/cycleway located on the northern side of the bridge.

It opened in 1966 and replaced earlier ferry services. It was a key engineering feat of its time, featuring a suspension design, and remained the primary crossing until the opening of the Second Severn Crossing in 1996.

Monnow Bridge and Gatehouse

Highlight • Bridge

Sometimes referred to as Monmouth Bridge, Monnow Bridge is a charming medieval stone gated crossing, the last fortified river bridge in Britain. Once, this kind of crossing was a common sight right across Europe, but today few remain. Due to its historical importance, Monnow Bridge is a Grade-I listed building and a scheduled monument.

Tintern Riverside Walk

Highlight (Segment) • River

Lovely riverisde road in Tintern. There's plenty of benches overlooking the water so it's a lovely spot for a picnic.

Tintern Abbey

Highlight • Historical Site

Beautiful abbey. Lots of pubs and the like nearby for food but I recommend the Filling Station cafe. The owners are keen cyclists and you can borrow their track pump and buy spare tyres and inner tubes, as well as your flat white and cake!

Tintern Wireworks Bridge

Highlight • Monument

An interesting old railway bridge which I believe took industrial rail across the river to join Chepstow to Monmouth. The surrounding countryside is stunning and in the local area is Tintern Abbey as well as a sculpture park and other interesting buildings.

Tintern Abbey

Highlight • Historical Site

Exquisitely preserved, Tintern Abbey was founded in the early 12th century and lies on the banks of the River Wye. Whilst its roof is long gone, its exterior walls remain standing, making it quite atmospheric to explore. The structure you see today largely dates from the 13th century when the abbey was considerably renovated.

The abbey fell into ruin after the Dissolution but its fame didn't fade for long. In fact, it's been the subject of poetry and art since the 18th century, notably featuring in William Turner's painting, The Chancel and Crossing of Tintern Abbey. It's under the management of the Welsh government's Cadw department and there's an entry fee if you'd like to walk around the ruins.
