Hostensmolen Ruiselede

Highlight • Monument

A very nicely restored, still working, stone mill in the windmill village of Ruislede. On some windy days you can visit the mill while the miller is at work. The mill is open every first Sunday of the month from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

Desplenter Brewery

Highlight • Monument

The brewery was founded in 1896 on the Wontergemstraat by Henri Desplenter. The steam brewery was replaced in the 1930s by a modernist building. From 1927 the management was in the hands of son Maurice Desplenter, who was succeeded in 1950 by his son Yvan.

In 1968, the Desplenter family founded the company RIVA. The company continued to grow and a new brewery with a larger capacity was built on Gottemstraat; the bottling plant and administration moved to the other side of the Wontergemstraat. Its success was largely due to the Dentergems Witbier, which was launched in the 1970s. In a collaboration with distributor Alken-Maes, it became the direct competitor for the Hoegaards Witbier, distributed by Interbrew.

In order to fully utilize the capacity of the new brewery, RIVA took over the acquisition path. She bought the brands Vondel and Lucifer and turned the latter into a strong blond beer, so that the comparison with Duvel was obvious. In 1988 she took control of De Halve Maan Brewery from Bruges; when it became independent again, RIVA kept the Straffe Hendrik brand. Liefmans Brewery was incorporated in 1990. Between 1991 and 1993, Brouwerij Het Anker from Mechelen was part of the group.

Mevrouwmolen Kanegem

Highlight • Monument

Round stone tower mill.
In the mid-17th century, there was a corn mill of the post mill type here. It was owned by the lord of the lordship of Hames (one of the two lordships in Kanegem, next to Beexchen). In 1736, a new post mill was built. In 1836, this was placed on a tower house, which made it possible to also operate the mill as an oil mill. In 1843, the mill was destroyed by fire. A stone mill was then built. This initially functioned as a corn and oil mill, but in 1894 the oil section was removed. A steam engine was also installed at that time, and in 1930 this was replaced by an electric motor. In 1954, the wind operation was stopped and only occasionally was milled by wind. The mill fell into disrepair and in 1970 it was in poor condition. Several subsequent owners carried out external restorations and in 2008 a definitive restoration began. However, financial resources were scarce, but after a grant was awarded, the work could continue from 2016 to 2018.
