Briek Schotte is sometimes called "The last real Flandrien".
The word 'Flandrien' was originally a swear word for the Flemish seasonal workers in Wallonia and Northern France: rough guys, perseverers, not afraid of anything.
Later, the word took on a completely different color in the cycling world and was included in the Dikke Van Dale:
"a cyclist who, in addition to great physical strength, is characterized by the ability to maintain his fighting spirit in unfavorable (weather) conditions, and is therefore extremely suitable for riding the Flemish spring classics."

Poelbergmolen

Highlight • Monument

The oldest known mention of the Poelberg mill dates from 1668, the current wooden post mill was built in 1726. This date has been found on various mill parts. After the Second World War, the mill was repaired from war damage. A thorough renovation took place in 1957. The mill remained in operation until about 1970. When the mill became city property in 1980, it was in a very dilapidated condition. Restoration work began in 1989, making it ready for grinding again in 1993. To preserve the openness of the area and the wind catch, the surrounding landscape was protected as a village view in 1993.

Hall Tower

Highlight • Monument

The pride of Tielt is undoubtedly the Hallentoren (Tall Tower). This imposing building with its belfry has graced our city for many years. In fact, since 1275, the Hallentoren has been the city's symbol. Medieval economic and social life revolved around this Cloth Hall and the now-defunct Aldermen's House.

The Hallentoren has undergone several transformations. Its current appearance dates from 1558-1560, except for the coats of arms of important families and lordships, which were added during the 1890 restoration.

The pear-shaped campanile houses a rare Du Méry carillon. In 1773, the Bruges bell founders Du Méry made it possible to enjoy atmospheric music. Perhaps you'll be lucky and find yourself enjoying some music right now! The Hallentoren was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999.

Statue "Tanneke Sconynckx"

Highlight • Monument

A jack-of-all-trades, that is undoubtedly Olivier the Devil. This statue is also by Jef Claerhout, just like that of Bailiff Spierinck and Tanneken Sconyncx: a devil, a witch and a bailiff thus adorn our hall tower of Tielt.

Olivier de Neckere was born in 1434 in Tielt as the son of a barber, living on the Market. When Lodewijk de Valois, the later French king, met Olivier on the Market, a true adventure began for Olivier: he became a confidant of the French king Louis XI and went to court with him. Cunning as he was, he picked up a piece of the pie for himself here and there. 'Necker' is an old Flemish word for 'devil', hence the name 'Olivier the Devil'. He was a true plaything of the French king. After the death of Louis XI, he was hanged on the gallows of Montfaucon in 1484. His death was a political settling of scores.
