Gerhagen Quiet Area Entrance Gate

Highlight • Structure

Gate Gerhagen is the name given by the municipality of Tessenderlo to this symbolic gate that, on the one hand, provides access to the Gerhagen nature reserve and the De Merode landscape park - of which Tessenderlo is the only Limburg municipality represented and Gerhagen is a part of. On the other hand, Poort Gerhagen is also the "green gate" to the province of Limburg. After all, the nature reserve is located together with part of Averbode Bos & Heide (which is partly located on Tessenderlo territory) at the tip of the "nose of Limburg". In short: a double gate function where Gerhagen wants to play a role. It is therefore no coincidence that the Poort Gerhagen information point is located in the building where the Forest Museum is housed, where you can get information about Gerhagen, Limburg and the De Merode landscape park. Anyone who steps from the parking lot to the forest museum, the sand mountain and the lookout tower will see the "gate" at the end, with immediately behind it the forest museum building with the information point located at the front of this building.

As you can read in the Forest Museum (see also image), both the museum and the environment in which it is located were adapted to function as a gateway to the Merode area.

This is one of the many entrances to Gerhagen but not the main entrance, for that you best park near the sand hill and the forest museum. This parking is ideal for those who want to explore the western part of Gerhagen and/or the eastern part of Averbode Vennen en Heide that is just across the Turnhoutsebaan. You are also not very far from Achterheide here which is a bit further south.

The musing bank has been in Gerhagen since 2012 and was created on the initiative of the self-help group OVOK, short for Parents of Deceased Children. The bench consists of the bench itself, a statue in blue stone and two texts on pedestals. The shape of the sofa has a symbolic meaning: after all, it is a three-quarter circle or in other words: "the circle is not round", which in turn refers to a life not fully lived. The same symbolism can also be found in the fact that the depicted face is only half. At the back of the statue are the letters of the alphabet in random order, also a symbol that was incorporated by sculptor Ralph Timmermans from Loksbergen, a borough of Halen, who realized the bench. The random order represents the unexpected and illogical in a human life.
