Oberwesel: Old Town and City Walls

Highlight • Historical Site

The so-called city of towers is characterized by its city wall with its 16 towers. On the former fortification you can walk around. Further attractions in Oberwesel are, for example, the Liebfrauenkirche and the striking St. Martin's Church, whose church tower was expanded in 1350 to a fortified tower.

Oberwesel is also one of the largest wine-growing communities in the Middle Rhine. On the 72 hectares of the steep vineyard Schönburg Castle, the winemakers mainly grow Riesling, Müller-Thurgau and Kerner. How about a tasting?

Seven Virgins Viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Sieben-Jungfrauen-Blick is located below the Günderodehaus. Actually, it cannot be separated from the Günderodehaus. Very nice. From there you can go straight down to the town of Oberwesel.

History / wing telegraph

Optical telegraphy for the transmission of messages according to the Chappe system. The French technician Claude Chappe developed at the time of the French. Revolution a technically feasible optical telegraph device based on the transmission of characters with the aid of pivoting signal arms. A swiveling crossbeam was attached to a high mast with two further swiveling bars at each end, so that different letters could be signaled with a code depending on the position. The telegraph stations were located between nine and twelve kilometers apart, depending on the nature of the terrain, so that the signs could be clearly seen with a telescope. Napoleon Bonaparte used this flexible and fast system to communicate with the various troops and probably also to organize the entire Rhine province. In 1794 a telegraph line was set up between Paris and Lille, which spanned 270 km with 22 stations. The transmission time of a letter or a coded message took about 2 minutes! Highlight • Viewpoint

Probably the most beautiful view over the Rhine valley to the Loreley with its entire terran and to St. Goarshausen and St. Goar is from the Maria Ruh view.

Plenty of safeguards, but not absolutely necessary. Areas with high ladders can be bypassed.

Suitable for normal hikers and children. Sturdy shoes are recommended. From Oberwesel after the climb there is a viewing and picnic area.

I discovered this trail on Outdooractive and chose it because I was impressed by Stefan Jung's description.
We parked in St. Goar (paying for parking) on the B9 and then walked past the church to the train station. To the right of the station, a sign points to Biebernheim, and that's how I found the underpass. At the end, the …
