The Planet Trail helps visitors to get an idea of the size of our solar system. The Sun, its nine major planets and their mean distance from the Sun are represented in 1:1 billion models. The planetary models are set up on the circular route along the dam, true to scale and at the appropriate distance. Beginning with the solar model, the visitor can explore the distances in the solar system up to Pluto. With an average step size, he moves through his cosmic home at about 4 times the speed of light. In order to reach the fixed star closest to the sun, Proxima Centauri, it would have to travel about 40,000 km in the same ratio, i.e. it would have to circle the earth completely once. In addition to the true-to-scale models of the planets, which are always located in the middle of the planetary stations, visitors are provided with some information about the respective planets through text panels and photos. The "earth model" can be rotated because the model of our moon is also located there. The suggestion for the construction of the planet path, the compilation of the information and the design of the planet stations came from a working group of the Birkenfeld high school. The planetary hiking trail was set up in 1996 by the Nonnweiler Dam Association and the Nonnweiler municipality. Source: text information board

Definitely worth a detour. Due to the nature reserve and bathing ban, nature is untouched here and the widely ramified reservoir with its many shelters offers a great view in every season.

Dam Nonnweiler

The Nonnweiler dam with a capacity of around 20 million cubic meters is a water protection area and drinking water reservoir. The dam was built in two phases from 1973 to 1975 and from 1977 to 1982. Overburden from the construction of the A1 was used for the dam. With a volume of 20 million m³ and a surface area of approx. 1km², the dam is the largest Water reservoirs in Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate.
