Whitehaven Harbour

Highlight • Settlement

In 17th-century England, only Bristol and London were busier ports than Whitehaven and it continued to be an important coal port well into the 20th century. Today Cumbria's largest coastal settlement is an attractive town with many amenities.

Interestingly, Whitehaven Harbour was the site of one of the last attempted invasions of Britain when John Paul Jones (no, not the Led Zeppelin bassist) landed 30 armed men here on 23rd April 1778.

Whitehaven Harbour and Lighthouses

Highlight • Viewpoint

Built on the Irish Sea coastline, Whitehaven was once a centre for shipping and mining industries. Despite its industrial heritage, the town has preserved its charm and stunning shoreline. Its pretty harbour, built in 1624, and its 18th-century lighthouse were once vital for the town's traders. Today, they make great places to visit to learn more about Whitehaven's history.

The Candlestick is the name given to the old chimney of Wellington Pit. It was built in 1850 as a ventilation shaft. The structure towers above Whitehaven harbour and visitors can walk around it on all sides.

This viewpoint can be found near 'The Candlestick' (see highlight komoot.com/highlight/4262277), only a stone's throw up the hill. It offers a fantastic panorama of the coast around Whitehaven, its harbour and lighthouses as well as of The Candlestick

King Pit Memorial

Highlight • Monument

A small stone cairn close to the Haig Colliery. The plaque reads 'This shaft was sunk in 1750 by Carlisle Spedding the mining agent for the Lowther Family. The 1793 it had reached a depth of 160 fathoms which at that time made it the deepest pit in the world'. 160 fathoms is approximately 960 feet or 295 metres.
