Liedberg Mill Tower

History

The seven-story tower on the eastern summit of the Liedberg was a keep of the fortress (castle) of Liedberg. There is no scientific dating of its age. According to Jakob Bremer, it could have been built around the year 900 after the Norman raids. The residential tower, built from fired bricks and ashlar sandstone, lost importance after the construction of Liedberg Castle.

In 1572 it was converted into a windmill by adding a wooden gallery and a wing hood to the tower. In the wars of 1664 and 1706 the gallery was destroyed and rebuilt in stone. In 1776 the rent collector of Liedberg Castle tried unsuccessfully to auction the mill because it was not profitable. The French declared the mill a domain in 1794. The unprofitable mill remained in operation until 1836. A storm in 1836 tore down parts of the roof structure, the wings with the axle and the pinion wheel, ending its use as a mill.

This route has a lot to offer. Haus Hülsdonk and the Rheydt moated castle are worth seeing. A stop in Liedberg 18 km before the end is recommended. A wonderfully varied tour.

The tour went across the fields first to the airport🛩 Mönchengladbach-Düsseldorf, past the Niers💧 to Rhyedt Castle, then in Liedberg we looked at the half-timbered houses and the castle. The tour started in Kaarst.

I started in the parking lot at Kaarst station. Unfortunately, I only turned on Komoot after 1.2 km 🙈 ... so that would be added.
First it went along the road on the bike path ... but then always between fields and meadows, not always on good paths. Sometimes very bumpy, uneven and also muddy.
Unfortunately, there was an event …

Apart from the sometimes biting wind, a beautiful tour with a skillful stop at my favorite ice cream parlor 🍧🍦👍🏻🌬🌞

The tour was varied. But not easy.
