Villa Schwalbenhof was built in 1957 by architect Fritz August Breuhaus de Groot, commissioned by the industrialist Erich Kiefer. Friedrich Sieburg, a frequent guest at the house, married Kiefer's widow, Alwine, after Kiefer's death, and the villa became Sieburg's final residence in 1963. Sieburg died in 1964.
Since 1982, the villa, which the municipality of Gärtringen had acquired four years earlier, has served as a small-scale performance venue. It hosts cabaret, music, literature, theater, and children's theater. A comprehensive, historically sensitive renovation and conversion into a cultural and event center took place between 2012 and 2013, and since then, it has also housed club and seminar rooms. Since then, it has also been possible to rent rooms for private celebrations and corporate events, as well as to hold wedding ceremonies. The grand reopening with an open house took place on September 15, 2013.
On the occasion of Sieburg's 100th birthday, the municipality of Gärtringen opened a memorial to Friedrich Sieburg in the tower room of the villa on May 18, 1993. In connection with the extensive renovation of Villa Schwalbenhof in 2012/2013, the exhibition was redesigned. It is now located in the Great Hall ("Erich Kiefer Hall") and can only be visited by prior arrangement with the municipal administration.
