Brunnen-Philipp Fountain, Adlerplatz

The well-Philipp stoically squats on a granite block and stares straight ahead. Probably the best-known sculpture in Hornisgrindestadt is located where the geographical center of the Grand Duchy of Baden used to be: on Adlerplatz. Created in 1908, at the time of Frederick II, when Achern was celebrating 100 years of town charter.
With the help of donations from local and emigrant citizens, the artist Konrad Johann Taucher (1873-1950) was hired for the jubilee fountain.
Taucher's fountain-Philipp assumes a thinker's pose, his chin resting on his fist in his right hand. Originally, a majolica frieze with mermaids adorned the back wall, like a backdrop; and the water gushed from the mouths of faun faces.
These elements of the fountain system have not survived the passage of time, but they are important in order to be able to establish the connection. The former ensemble staged the Mummelsee legend of the grieving shepherd boy who danced the night away with a mermaid, which meant her death sentence.
