Air-raid shelter Appenmühle

Highlight • Historical Site

The Appenmühle air raid shelter in Daxlanden was built in 1942/43. The bunker at Rheinhafenstrasse 47, above the Appenmühle, is a protected cultural monument.
The bunker was renovated in 1980 and now houses rehearsal rooms for music groups.

Theodor-Kunz Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Coming from Daxlanden, following the direction of Karlsruhe city center, I like to pass this bridge.
For me it marks a forgiving, relaxed Karlsruhe, a big city in which village life and nature still have space in equal measure.

The Theodor Kunz Bridge is purely a cyclist and pedestrian bridge.

The Thomasweir (also called Appenmühlwehr) regulates the water level of the Mühlgraben, which branches off from the Alb.
A well-designed fish ladder was installed during the renovation.

The Gaulsloch

Highlight • River

Until the middle of the 19th century, transports were carried out exclusively by horse or ox and wagon. Not least because of the important food company Sinner, there were numerous haulage companies in Grünwinkel. The well-known Sinner beer had to be transported to the restaurants in the region. And here at this point of the Alb, a very deep place, also called Gumpen, they led their horses to wash. Hence the name Gaulsloch.

The Maria Hilf Chapel on the Alb belongs to the district of Grünwinkel and to the parish of St. Josef of the Pastoral Care Unit Karlsruhe-Südwest. Mostly it is closed and not accessible to the public. Anyone who would like to marvel at them from the inside, however, would like to commend the Open Monument Day (always on the second Sunday of September), when it opens its doors.

Eiswiesen Grünwinkel

Highlight • Historical Site

Nearby were the ice cellars, which were important for the Grünwinkler Sinner brewery until the invention of refrigeration machines. The Alb was dammed here in winter to produce ice. The ice surface was given to private individuals piece by piece, who had to take care of dismantling it and transporting it to the ice cellar. stadtlexikon.karlsruhe.de/index.php/De:Lexikon:top-0221

War Memorial Grünwinkel

Highlight • Monument

In 1928 the Karlsruhe Grünwinkel citizens' association informed the city of the plan to erect a memorial for those who died in the war. He asked the city administration to provide a suitable place. On September 13, 1928, the city council proposed a location in the Albgrün on the Hochgestade near the small chapel with a view of the old village center to the Grünwinkel citizens' association.
The simplicity of the monument designed by Meyerhuber blends in with the landscape of the meadow. A 2.40 meter high column made of gray shell limestone stands free, surrounded by individual trees, on a very massive two-tiered base. The back is decorated with a relief of a sword pointing to the earth, representing defensibility. On both sides, the names of the 76 citizens of Grünwinkel who died in the war are carved in alphabetical order under the Iron Cross according to years of war. At the express request of the Monument Committee, the front, with a view over the Alb to the old village center, is decorated with a relief of a standing woman in an antique robe, with a branch in her raised right hand. "It was interpreted as the embodiment of the homeland, which, sunk in mourning, leans to the earth in greeting, but heroically, bearing the pain, lays down an oak branch for the fallen hero."
