Spreckel's Temple of Music 🎶

Highlight • Monument

The Temple in the Music Concourse, dedicated on September 9, 1900, is the third bandstand to grace Golden Gate Park. Claus Spreckels (the German-born Sugar King) gave $75,000 (millions today) towards the $78,810 cost of the building. The Italian Renaissance style arcade has an acoustically reflective coffered shell standing 70 feet high and covered in Colusa Sandstone. It suffered damage in the 1906 earthquake (much of its Colusa sandstone cornices, balustrades and corners collapsed), and was rebuilt a third time in 1995 after the 1989 earthquake. The Golden Gate Park Band, an institution since 1882, and guests provide free concerts 25 Sundays each year.

The California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, California, is among the largest museums of natural history in the world, housing over 26 million specimens. The Academy began in 1853 as a learned society and still carries out a large amount of original research, with exhibits and education becoming significant endeavors of the museum during the 20th century. The former buildings was damaged in the 1906 earthquake, and again in the 1989 earthquake, it was completely rebuilt in 2008 covering 400,000 square feet (37,000 square metres).
Besides the main Kimball Natural History Museum, there are:
- a Planetarium with the world's largest completely digital planetarium dome,
- the Rainforests of the World in a 90-foot (27 m) glass dome
- an Aquarium with large shark and reef tanks, as well as many separate exhibit tanks en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Academy_of_Sciences

In a city as famous for it's architecture as San Francisco, the Music Concourse still stands out as a highlight of Golden Gate Park. Added to the Nation Registry of Historic Places in 2004, the Concourse hosts free concerts throughout the summer and has impeccable landscaped grounds; which makes it worth a visit even without a concert being on.

Goethe-Schiller Monument

Highlight • Monument

At the north-east end of the Music Concours is one of four exact copies of Rietschel's original Goethe–Schiller Monument (German: Goethe-Schiller-Denkmal) in Weimar, Germany, which were commissioned by German-Americans in the United States for the Goethe–Schiller monuments in San Francisco (1901), Cleveland (1907), Milwaukee (1908), and Syracuse (1911). It incorporates Ernst Rietschel's 1857 bronze double statue of Johann Wolfgang Goethe (1749–1832) and Friedrich Schiller (1759–1805), who are probably the two most revered figures in German literature. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goethe%E2%80%93Schiller_Monument
