Eider Barrage & Lock

Highlight (Segment) • Monument

Imposing structure with high dykes that serve as a bulwark against the storm surges of the North Sea. On the inland side, the wide estuary of the Eider extends to Tönning. When the tide is low, large mudflats are created on which numerous birds seek their food.

Katinger Watt Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural Monument

Where lugworms once burrowed and soft-shell mussels thrived, we now discover, after the construction of the Eider Barrage at the mouth of the Eider River, a polder landscape dominated by freshwater: the Katinger Watt bird sanctuary. It provides habitat for numerous animals and plants. Ponds, pools, deciduous forests, reed beds, grasslands, and arable land offer them a home.

There is also a nature center where you can learn a great deal about this area.

Katinger Watt Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural Monument

The 13 km long circular walk through the "Katinger Watt" offers a beautiful hike. Lots of birds, trains and a very untypical forest area are to be discovered. The forest area at Katinger Watt is very untypical for the otherwise less wooded peninsula Eiderstedt. The forest was created only after construction of the Eider barrier from 1868 and is, certainly also due to the sandingen soil, quite light. The many water surfaces and Sielzüge offer unique image / photo opportunities. The inclusion of binoculars on the tour is highly recommended.
Beginning and end of the circular walk are in Katingersiel at the tavern Andresen, in which a stop is worthwhile.

Very impressive start from the Eider barrage and then into the Katinger Wadden Sea 👍 An indescribable natural landscape!
Unfortunately, the way back over the dam was impossible because the wind was too strong and so we had to go along the bottom. It would have been better on the dam but next time..! A very nice round and recommended …

November 1st. The winter season has started. The excursion boats no longer operate, the bike rental shop is closed and the migratory birds have been around for a long time. It's quiet in the Katinger Watt. Not getting a bird 🦅 in front of the lens 😞

Nice round in the nature reserve with a lot of nature and beautiful views.
It's worth it for humans and 🐕
As a reward, there were waffles with ice cream in a rustic coffee ☕️
I can only recommend 👍

Not exactly the right one
Time of year for this tour and especially not after days of constant rain...
Twice I almost left my shoe behind in the mud 😂

Unfortunately, the end of the tour was also very "long-winded", as it took over an hour below the newly built reinforcement dike along the road, which was still closed.
