Monument to the Indian Prince Rajaram Chuttraputti

Highlight • Monument

It was built in 1870 by the English sculptor Carlo Francesco Fuller. The monument has the shape of a vaulted canopy supported by four small columns, under which is the sculpted bust of the late Indian prince Rajaram Chuttraputti of Kolhapur with an inscription in four languages: Italian, English, Hindi and Punjabi. The young prince was returning from a trip to London - where he had gone to study and to greet the Queen of England - and while he was staying in Florence at the Grand Hotel in Piazza Ognissanti he was struck by a sudden illness that on 30 November 1870 killed at the age of twenty-one. His body was burned according to the Hindu rite at the confluence of two rivers (in this case Arno and Mugnone), where his ashes were scattered. At the time, the event aroused the curiosity of many Florentines who came in large numbers to attend the ceremony and since then the place has been called "the Indian". In 1872 a building was built nearby which served as a public café and which took the name of Palazzina Indiano or Palazzina dell'Indiano. In 1972 a bridge was built near the monument which took the name of Indian bridge.

It's not that easy to find running routes in Italy: In the cities through the park, but not too early or too late for it to be open. Small paths on Komoot should not be trusted: they could be obstructed or overgrown. On green areas, dog owners take their pride for a walk with their own pitfalls. Like here along …
