Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (Pfarrkirche zur Kreuzerhöhung), Laxenburg

Highlight • Religious Site

The construction of the former imperial court parish church in Laxenburg was initiated and promoted by Emperor Leopold I. The old church had become too small. On June 11, 1693, the emperor personally laid the foundation stone for the new church, which was built on parts of the old walls. The result is an exemplary, magnificent baroque church with a central room and a central bell tower above the portal. It stands directly opposite the "Blue Courtyard" of the imperial Laxenburg Palace.

Haus der Laune Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

This curious and much puzzled building was built according to the designs of the architect Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg in the late nineties of the 18th century. The importance of the "Haus der Laune" in Laxenburg in terms of cultural history lies in the fact that an intellectual architectural caricature was created here for the first time in Austria, which in the Freiraum Natur-Garten ensured the continued existence of court jesters, which was strongly questioned in the 18th century apart from the ceremonial "ennui" (boredom) should express the desire not for rational, but for irrational freedom, which was ultimately rooted in the critical faculties of the Enlightenment.

After 1780, under Emperor Joseph II, Maria Theresa's son, the approximately 250-hectare palace park, unlike the Schönbrunn palace park, which was retained in the French style, was transformed into an English landscape garden. The most striking feature of the castle park is the 25 hectare castle pond. In the castle pond there is an island on which the Franzensburg, named after Emperor Franz II and I, was built between 1801 and 1836. In 1806 a ferry was set up that crossed the pond from the mainland to the island with the Franzensburg. In winter it is replaced by a wooden bridge. On the opposite side, the island can be reached all year round via a stone bridge.
