Varna Palace

Highlight • Monument

Varna Palæet (Today Odd Fellow Palæet Varna, Aarhus) is a forest restaurant in Marselisborg Forest, south of central Aarhus. It was built in 1908-1909 and inaugurated in 1909 in connection with the National Exhibition in Aarhus.

The architecture was hotly debated when it was built, and it was feared that the building would disfigure the forest. The architect had to make some changes before the project was approved. After the erection of the building there was no criticism.

Varna Palæet is named after the Bulgarian city and fortress of Varna on the Black Sea. This is because a former owner of the Marselisborg estate, Baron Christian C.N. Gersdorff, had taken part in Russian military service on the Black Sea coast and therefore (in the early 1800s) named the watermill on the site after him.

Varna Palæet now houses Odd Fellow Lodges and the Varna Restaurant.

Infinite Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

- good spot for a short break
- short cool "endless" walk on the water
- great view on the harbor of Århus
- may be heavily frequented on weekends

Blommehaven Campsite

Highlight • Rest Area

Good campsite for excursions (cycling, hiking) to Aarhus and surroundings. But in the low season the shop is closed and there is not even a bread service. No shops or restaurants nearby. Also no good information in the reception. We had to discover the great bike path to Aarhus ourselves. A bit too little for the most expensive place in the area.

Norsminde Harbour

Highlight • Structure

The Norsminde marina is a natural harbor in beautiful surroundings at the mouth of the Kysing Fjord on the east coast of Jutland, 9 nautical miles south of Aarhus.

A well-protected harbor with toilets, showers and access to the clubhouse (but no overnight accommodation in the clubhouse). Fresh air. Relaxing environment. The fjord is a nature reserve. Hiking opportunities.

Bus stop on the lock bridge with departures to Odder (15 minutes) and to Aarhus (35 minutes) about once an hour. In Aarhus, the bus terminates at a 5-minute walk from the pedestrian zone; in Odder at the end of the shopping street.

BBQ area
Children's playground
Jetty for children to catch crabs
Bathing beach in front of the harbor entrance at the mouth of the fjord
Small boat slipway
Mast mounting crane
Diesel oil filling station.
