Whitney-on-Wye Village and Bridge

Highlight • Settlement

Whitney is a lovely little village on the banks of the River Wye. It is excellent walker's territory, with Herefordshire's rolling hills on its doorsteps and the famous Offa's Dyke Path a short way to the west.

The Boat Inn's riverside garden is a great place for refreshment in summer. You might even get lucky and spot one of the Wye's inhabitant otters. Accommodation can be sought here, as well as at a couple of nearby glamping establishments.

Whitney-on-Wye Toll Bridge

Highlight • Monument

One of only eight privately owned toll bridges in the UK, Whitney-on-Wye toll bridge carries the B4350 across the River Wye. Both the bridge and its attending toll house are Grade II-listed structures. First built in 1780, separate floods destroyed at least two incarnations before the current design was put in place in 1797.
