Everyday Life in the Border Territory

Highlight • Historical Site

On May 26, 1952, the GDR sealed off the internal German border and created a special border regime. The population in the 500-meter "protective strip" at the border and in the five-kilometer-deep "restricted area" now requires an entry on their ID card in order to move in the border area. Several thousand residents are forcibly evicted from the border area. Permission is required when visiting relatives for celebrations or funerals. Many access roads will be closed.

The people's police are checking the remaining entrances to the restricted area. It's not just the border troops and the police "section representatives" who pay attention to escape suspects. Civilians also specifically observe their surroundings as "volunteers". From the 1960s onwards, “Activities for Order and Security” checked the border area for possible hiding places for those seeking to escape.

Hötensleben Border Memorial

Highlight • Historical Site

The GDR's border barriers are not located directly on the border line. This lies between the actual border and the front barriers
“upstream territory” of the GDR. There are no border or security facilities here.

From 1967 onwards, the GDR border troops used the “upstream” to mark the actual border
Territory" border columns painted black, red and yellow with the GDR emblem. They mark the border 3 to 5 meters east of the border line, which lies in the middle of the Aue stream in Hötensleben. Only specially trained "border reconnaissance officers" from the border troops who are considered to be particularly reliable are allowed to enter the territory of the GDR that is visible towards the Federal Republic. They are tasked with observing customs and federal border protection in the Federal Republic.

Here at the border monument there is a lot of information and exhibition of the border installations. Still has an oppressive effect today.
