Paderborn City Center

Highlight • Settlement

The city of Paderborn is a large city in the eastern part of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia with over 150,000 inhabitants. It is located in the district of the same name and is its district town, is a university town, regional center and center of the Hochstift Paderborn region. The name refers to the sources of the Pader in today's city center.

Paderborn was first mentioned in a document in 777, when a Reichstag and a missionary synod took place in Paderborn under Charlemagne. The first Westphalian university was founded in Paderborn in 1614, which was later converted into an independent theological faculty. A new university was founded in 1972. The city has been the seat of a bishopric since the ninth century; this was elevated to an archdiocese in 1930.

The city received its current boundaries through the incorporation of surrounding communities as part of the regional reform in North Rhine-Westphalia in 1974, which made Paderborn a large city.

Today Paderborn is the 56th largest city in Germany.

History

The main line was opened between Hamm and Paderborn on October 1, 1850 by the Royal Westphalian Railway Company. The line was extended to Warburg in 1853. The Sennebahn was added in July 1902. Another branch line was opened in 1899 in the direction of Büren (Almetalbahn). This line was closed in 1981. Recently there have been discussions about reactivating the line and thus providing a better connection to Paderborn/Lippstadt airport. In addition, new tracks were laid up to the Paderborn city limits. Another branch line was built in 1906 in the direction of Bad Lippspringe; it branches off at Paderborn Nord station. In 1965 it was closed for passenger traffic and is now only used by the Benteler works.

Near Paderborn main station, the 25,000 kilometers of track of the then German Federal Railway was electrified in December 1970. A memorial plaque in the station building commemorates this milestone. From the summer of 1973, the DB attempted to supplement the successful IC network with branch lines. Three express train pairs of the Intercity supplementary system (DC) ran between the Ruhr area and Bebra. However, as the hoped-for demand failed to materialize, this "IC feeder service" was discontinued in the summer of 1976. In connection with the high-speed line Hanover-Würzburg, it was planned to expand the Ruhr area-Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe(-Munich) connection into a regular IC line. After 1990, this became the Central Germany connection with destinations in Thuringia and Saxony or Berlin. ICE trains were also used in some cases for this from the timetable change in December 2002. As demand did not meet expectations, since December 2007 only IC trains have run via Paderborn in the direction of Berlin Central Station. Individual long-distance services, particularly in peripheral areas, were removed from the timetable, and the entire long-distance service was temporarily called into question.

With the timetable change in 2010/2011, the IC between Düsseldorf/Cologne and Leipzig/Berlin disappeared from the local train service. Since then, only four IC/ICE pairs have run via Paderborn Hbf: three ICE/IC from the Ruhr area to Dresden Hbf, one ICE to Munich every day, two ICE/IC to Düsseldorf and one ICE to Wiesbaden. On Fridays and Sundays, an additional IC pair was offered to Berlin-Gesundbrunnen.
