Wetterhorn Lift Replica

Highlight • Monument

The Wetterhorn Elevator in Switzerland was Switzerland's first public aerial cableway for passenger transport.
At the nearby «Hotel Wetterhorn» there is a replica of a cabin based on the original steel frame. An original cab drive is on display in the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne.

Wetterhorn Approach Towards Gleckstein Hut

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The recommendation at the beginning of the tour is really not understated. Ordinary mountain boots are a prerequisite and also in the further course of the route care and concentration. A misstep could quickly put an end to the adventure.

The Wetterhorn lift, inaugurated near Grindelwald on July 27, 1908, was a pioneering achievement, as it was the first cable car to transport people in Switzerland. It was a combination of a lift and an aerial tramway with two suspension cables.

Initially, this railway was a great success. Although well ahead of its time, the Wetterhorn elevator ceased operations in 1915 due to a lack of tourists following the outbreak of World War I. He was not reinstated for various reasons. In particular, the location of the mountain station of the first section on a sloping ledge was not very attractive.

Today only the ruins of the Enge mountain station and the foundations of the valley station remain. The mountain station has already been renovated once to save it from decay.

Waterfall at Kleines Schreckhorn

Highlight • Waterfall

Below the small Schreckhorn there is a waterfall that immediately catches the eye of every hiker. The meltwater from the snowfields below the Schreckhorn is discharged via this waterfall.

On the way to the Glecksteinhütte you pass the Wyssbach waterfall, which provides a small shower. The path is secured with gratings in this area.

Trail to Gleckstein Hut

Highlight • Trail

The way to the Glecksteinhütte ... for mountain riders the track does not seem like a thing. There are people who jog this distance 😲 but you have to go this way very often. Otherwise, it is already a difficult tour because you almost always on a narrow, very often rocky path along the gorge between Wetterhorn and Mettenberg along walks. Unfortunately, one can only imagine how the upper Grindelwald glacier once made its way here. For me it was once again a tingling mountain adventure for which I had trained my surefootedness days before. The destination, the Glecksteinhütte, fantastically located, with wonderful views. Here you can stay well and stay overnight.

Oberer Grindelwald Glacier

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Upper Grindelwald Glacier is one of the famous ice giants in the Bernese Oberland. Today it can hardly be seen from the entrance to the glacier gorge, it lies hidden behind the towering rock faces.

Gleckstein Hut (SAC)

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The SAC Glecksteinhütte is located above Grindelwald, on a green terrace with breathtaking views of the valley and the surrounding mountains. It is the ideal refuge for those seeking adventure and relaxation in the mountains, with simple rooms, a cozy dining room and a sunny terrace. It is a paradise for wildlife lovers, families, mountaineers and paragliders. The kitchen offers regional dishes prepared with local ingredients. It is open from June to October, but for the winter period there is only an emergency room with limited beds. Reservations are required. Info: gleckstein.ch/index.php
