Appenzell Old Town

Highlight • Settlement

Rustic mountain village in a fantastic location, inviting an extended break. The prices for food and drink might be quite touristy, but the Swabian option with Coop and Migros at the entrance to the village also works.

St. Mauritius Parish Church

Highlight • Religious Site

Parish and Mother Church of St. Mauritius, Appenzell
The parish and mother church of St. Mauritius stands on the back of the limestone spur and towers over the entire village of Appenzell as a landmark.
The classicist nave with a total length of 57 m, a width of 22 m and an interior height of 14.5 m extends between the west tower and the choir above a crypt. The tower height with the cross is 45 m. The reconstruction of the late Gothic high altar from 1504 is an art-historical puzzle. The current choir organ dates from 1895. The ceiling painting by Franz Vettiger is from 1891 and includes three ceiling mirrors and 14 medallions; the central longitudinal oval contains 163 individual figures. The choir stalls date from 1907. The parish church has 1098 seats (704 on the ground floor, 84 emergency seats, 310 on the first gallery) and a second gallery for the choir.
History
The first church was probably built around 1068-1071. The second church was built on the same site around 1291-1300. The third church was built between 1488 and 1513 with the lower church and the mighty tower that still exists today and the late Gothic choir. On March 18, 1560, the nave fell victim to the great village fire. A comprehensive renovation of the church can be seen between 1639 and 1642. Due to dilapidation and lack of space, the nave was completely renovated between 1823 and 1826. The first repairs to the current church had to be carried out as early as 1832 and 1837. In 1879, external renovations to the choir and tower became necessary. A comprehensive interior renovation took place in 1890-1892 and another exterior renovation in 1917. The tower had to be renovated in 1923 because of the new chimes with 8 bells, cast by Rüetschi in Aarau. At the same time, St. Mauritius was painted there by Johannes Hugentobler. In 1963, the arcade on the main street was built. The last major interior renovation took place under the direction of Felix Schmid in 1969-1971. In 1995/1996, the church was restored on the outside. In 2001, the sacristy was expanded.

Restaurant Altes Bild, Eggerstanden

Highlight • Restaurant

Restaurant Altes Bild, Alte Eggerstandenstrasse, Eggerstanden
The picture in Eggerstanden is mentioned in the Appenzell historical records as early as the beginning of the 16th century. At that time, it stood on the east side of Eggerstanden. A reference to the picture dates back to 1780, and it is documented on the west side of the village. Embroidery machines were in operation in what is now the hall until around 1890. In 1898, an oven was installed in the building, and the property was renamed the Altes Bild Restaurant and Bakery. In 1950, the then owners decided to close the bakery. In addition to the restaurant business, farming has also been practiced. Since 1969, a milk collection point has also been attached to the Altes Bild.
