Höllensteinsee Hiking Trail

Highlight • Trail

A unique view of Lake Höllenstein. Caution is advised when it's wet! Those with less than surefootedness should use poles. The trail is definitely not suitable for mountain biking!

Höllstein Lake

Highlight • Lake

Very beautiful lake, nestled in a narrow valley. The stairs at the dam are only suitable for pedestrians... Cyclists must take the hiking trail above the inn to the river, then an easy-to-ride path leads to the Blaibacher See.

May 30, 2025,Höllensteinsee-Steig
Guided tour with Walter on the newly opened Höllenseesteig trail. Official opening on May 23, 2025. Today is the first tour open to the public. Over 100 people would have registered, but only 22 were able to participate.

Planning began four years ago, and it took two years to complete the trail.

This isn't for walkers. I found the lakeside trail a bit uncomfortable, as most of it slopes steeply down to the lake. Parts of the trail are closed until June 30th due to animal welfare. Otherwise, it's quite varied. I'll walk it again after June 30th.

Beautiful loop around the lake.
Please always follow the signs.
We missed a sign once because we were currently diverted due to eagle owls nesting.
That means don't follow my route. Abyss :)

There's a new hiking trail (1a) at Höllensteinsee, and we had to check it out today! 😅🏞️

The starting point of the tour is the hiking car park at Höllensteinsee. First, you follow hiking trail 1 for a bit, and from the junction with trail 1a (still off-grid!), you'll notice that not many people have taken the trail yet! 👍🌲 …

The Höllensteinsteig is super well signposted, you can also go without Komoot 😁

Demanding circular hike around the Birkenberg on beautiful forest paths, mostly near the shore on a rustic-wild trail along the Höllensteinsee with ups and downs and steep terrain passages. The newly laid "Höllenstein-Steig" leads through an impressive natural landscape with many great views.
This section of terrain requires a certain amount of mindfulness and caution in some places.

Due to the fickle weather, only a short hike home today.
The trail, which was only opened at the end of May 2025, leads through an impressive landscape with some steep rock formations and lush flora and fauna. If you hike it counterclockwise (definitely the more beautiful option 😉), it initially runs close to the lake and offers varied terrain. …
