Waldreichs Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1258 and in the Middle Ages belonged to a ring of fortified castles built to protect the Austrian Mark. In a very eventful history, it is destroyed several times and often changes hands. Nothing remains of the original castle - the ruins were restored by the Windhag Scholarship Foundation in the 1980s and have been the seat of the Ottenstein Forestry Office since 1990. The castle also houses the exciting Lower Austrian Falconry and Birds of Prey Center in Waldreich - access to this area is of course permitted. Unfortunately, the castle cannot be visited.
