Melk Abbey, officially Melk Abbey (Latin Abbatia SS. App. Petri et Pauli apud Melk), is a Benedictine abbey in the state of Lower Austria in the town of Melk on the right bank of the Danube. Today's baroque building was built by Jakob Prandtauer between 1702 and 1746. As a landmark of the Wachau, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has been described as “the most emblematic and dominant Baroque building.”[1] It also houses the Melk Stiftsgymnasium, the oldest still existing school in Austria. The abbot of the monastery is Georg Wilfinger (Wikipedia).

In the Melk region, the route runs for about 15 kilometers from Artstetten to Melk, where it meets the Danube Cycle Path, making it ideal for cycle pilgrims as well. Well-signposted sections, quiet paths, and the scenic beauty of the Danube make this stretch particularly popular. Every year, thousands of pilgrims and cyclists pass by the sculpture in Melk – a symbol of the path of peace and connection.
