Holsthum Hop Fields

Highlight • Structure

Holsthum is a village in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, located in the Eifel. Holsthum is known for its hop cultivation, which has been practiced since medieval times. The hops from Holsthum are mainly used for brewing pilsner beer.
However, hop cultivation in Holsthum is no longer as flourishing as it used to be. Due to competition from other hop areas, mechanization and the decrease in demand for pilsner beer, the number of hop farmers in Holsthum has fallen sharply. In 2013, only two hop farmers were still active in the village. One of them is Josef Schmitz, who has been growing hops on his farm for over 40 years. He has about 3 hectares of hop fields, where he harvests about 10 tons of hops every year.

Many people know about Bitburger beer, but few realize that it's grown here in this valley. Festival and harvest season are a worthwhile time to watch the harvest.

Roter Puhl Sandstone Cliffs on the Enz

Highlight • Natural Monument

At the "Roter Puhl" the Enz has cut the beech slope at a stately height. Here, in bright orange-red colors, the middle red sandstone rock of the Triassic geologic age can be seen. These deposits in river and delta areas are about 220 million years old.

The oblique stratification of the sandstone visible in the bedrock in alternating layers with horizontal strata and gravel bands testifies to the different flow conditions of the primordial waters. The arch's shape is the result of thousands of years of exposure to water from the meandering Enz River.

The surface of the rock face is still subject to constant weathering, in places the rock is slightly more porous. An interesting insight into the floor structure can be obtained in the upper part. The overlying Earths here only reach a thickness of less than a meter. Natural crevices provide nesting and breeding grounds for the kingfisher, which is native to the area.
