A very demanding climb, so stopping at the curve and marveling at the views has double value, that of resting and that of contemplating.

Cist of the Creu de Principi

Highlight • Historical Site

The cist with tumulus of the Creu de Principi was discovered in 1986 because it is mentioned in the act of consecration of Sant Julià de Ribelles from the year 947. This megalithic tomb is located 1020 meters above sea level and it is the first that was known in the lands of Alta Garrotxa. The place forms part of the northern slope of the Bassegoda hill and is located on calcareous ground, between the Salarsa hill and the Sant Bartomeu hill. The tomb, which is pentagonal in shape, was made up of 5 limestone slabs (of an approximate size of 110 cm x 85 cm x 75 cm). Of these, three were anchored in grooves made in the natural rock. The tomb was covered by a mound of earth with a circular ring of large stones around the chamber, more than 7 meters in diameter. This tomb, due to its architecture, can be dated from the Middle Neolithic (3,500-2,700 BC), despite having found little ceramic material. It seems that the population that built the cist of the Creu de Principi knew and practiced agriculture and animal husbandry and together with the recent work in the Pólvora cave makes researchers think that there would have been a prolonged presence of human groups in the area during seasonal periods.
