Ermida de São Brás ⛪ Tavira

Highlight • Religious Site

Once located outside the city, this small hermitage of late medieval origin was run by the São Brás brotherhood. Oriented to the east, the temple consists of a single nave and chancel, having the hermit's house attached. In the sixteenth century there were venerated here, on three altars, St. Brás (in the center of the chancel), St. Anthony (side of the Gospel) and St. Barbara (side of the Epistle).
A campaign of works that took place in the second half of the eighteenth century, which is attributed to master gardener Diogo Tavares and Ataíde or one of his followers, gives new shapes to the temple, gaining its present appearance. An old porch was annulled and the nave was enlarged, renewing the appearance of the main façade with a portal and large window with expressive masonry frames and a dynamic rococo pediment. Inside the temple, you can admire two wooden images, one of Our Lady and one of the patron. cm-tavira.pt/site/content/monuments/sermity-working

The Church of St. Paul in Tavira (Igreja de São Paulo) was built in 1606 and was part of a former convent of the Hermits of São Paulo. The exterior is simple, but inside you'll find religious art from the 16th to the 18th centuries, including a Baroque altarpiece of Our Lady of Carmo. The church is located near Praça Dr. António Padinha.
